What types of documents get notarized?

Notaries can notarize a wide range of documents. Common types of documents that may require notarization include real estate documents, wills and trusts, power of attorneys, financial documents, government documents, affidavits and declarations, and medical directive documents. In general, any legal document that requires verification of the identity of the signer or needs to be certified as authentic may require notarization.

Why do documents need to be notarized?

The central value of notarization lies in the Notary's impartial screening of a signer for identity, willingness and awareness. This screening detects and deters document fraud, and helps protect the personal rights and property of private citizens from forgers, identity thieves and exploiters of the vulnerable.

What do I need to have to get a document notarized?

You will need to bring a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID card. You should also bring any documents that need to be notarized. Please ensure that the document you present has a proper notarial certificate included or attached.

Always review your document carefully to identify if there are more requirements such as Witnesses, multiple Identifications or other specifications to accompany the document.

Can you notarize documents from out-of-state?

Yes. I can notarize documents from out of state. The only restriction is the notarization and signing both need to occur within a North Carolina County.

Can you notarize a document in another language?

Yes. I can notarize a document in a foreign language as long as the notarial certificate is in the approved format and in English.

Can you assist me with my documents?

No. Notaries are forbidden from offering legal advice. A notary cannot review the document, explain or discuss the contents of the document or offer any kind of advice about the document.

A notary can only work within the bounds of the notarial certificate provided. If the document does not have a notarial certificate you or your attorney will need to select one, revise the document and resubmit the document for notarization.

How much does a notarization cost?

$10 per notarial act. A notarial act is a single signature, oath or affirmation

For mobile notary services a trip fee may be charged. When your appointment is confirmed a trip fee will be disclosed.
